Texas is one of the biggest states in this country...so lets just use it as a waste land for all the others states to dump their toxic trash in. It looks like the Government is trying to find a way to get rid of all the toxic waste in the country and they want to put it underground in West Texas. Only leaving the public a couple of weeks to speak out against this horrible idea that could cause so much harm to so many people.
Toxic waste can include used computer parts or batteries, to chemicals or heavy metals, they can cause harm to animals or humans and can have horrible effects on a growing public if not taken care of properly. These accidents of toxic waste leaking into the environment happen all too often and I for one do not want any part of it that close to my home.
They have set the deadline for protest by December 26th of this year. They are only giving a short amount of time to review and for the public to approve or oppose the decision, which I feel is unfair. This is a hasty decision that needs more time and consideration and I do not feel that Texas should be the state that become the trash can for every other state to dump their toxic waste in.

Austin Police and Their Weakest Links.
I read a post on my classmates blog page, Texas State of Mind, about a police officer who sounds like he is abusing the law. He has been fired from the Austin Police Force twice and is now on trail for his DWI he received after he shot and killed a teenager May 2008. The stream of bad luck has portrayed the former cop, Leonardo Quintana as a nasty old crooked cop who uses his authority of the badge to get away with whatever he wants. A police officer should be the one who upholds the law and makes everyone around him or her feel safe, that they themselves would never dream of breaking the laws they are bound to serve. I have heard, and read so many emails about how you can call someone now if you feel that you are being pulled over at night by a person who might harm you. What has this world come to, cops are suppose to be the good guys. Yet, so much power and authority can sometimes be to much for some to handle.
I believe that this mans justice will come in due time, but we must also remember that he is just human. And, maybe he was never cut out for this job, or the responsibilities of protecting the innocent and keeping his life in order all at the same time. The news media has a way of making their readers lean in whatever way they feel will get the most attention and this is a juicy story for everyone.

EPA vs Texas
Texas feels that the EPA has reinterpreted the Clean Air Act in order to exempt smaller pollutants from greenhouse gas regulations. The “tailoring rule” was an amendment to the Clean Air Act and a sort of add on to the endangerment findings that was reports in 2009. The state of Texas feels that the EPA is taking the bill to far and overstepping their boundaries.
Lisa Jackson, an EPA Administer, feels that the greenhouse gases pose a harmful threat to the safety of humans and the quality of the atmosphere, along with the fragile o-zone layer that effects the climate change. The EPA is pushing the protection of human lives on this issue, hard. They want the oil and gas companies to know that they have to have these changes in effect by the deadline or the companies will be shut down and a construction ban will be set. The EPA feels that Texas has different priorities right now and hopes to get back to working smoothly with the State.
Texas, home to some of the nation’s largest refineries, doesn’t feel that the EPA’s claim on how harmful greenhouse gases are is something for concern. Texas wants the issue to go to a court ruling to get more evidence that these chemicals are as harmful as they say, and that it is impertinent that they be regulated more strictly. The state environmental commission does not think that the EPA has the “authority to regulate greenhouse gases, and calls the new rules illegal.”
This is going to be a long battle and some people are unsure about why the EPA is pushing the issue now, possibly due to President Obama’s plan to help regulate climate change. Some also feel that the EPA is using legislative power they should not be able to use. This is making Texas very wary on the idea of changing all the rules and regulations of the oil and gas companies that sit along the coast and are stretched out along the plains.
This is from a letter to the EPA from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality; “Texas has neither the authority nor the intention of interpreting, ignoring or amending its laws in order to compel the permitting of greenhouse gas emissions." This is proof enough that the state is not budging on the issue just yet, hopefully they will come around to idea of helping to preserve our Earth and help improve the health of the people.

Giving grants to those that need them
I came across the news article of the ‘Promise Neighborhood Grant’ that the Austin Achievement Zone had applied for and did not get. Along with that the St. Johns and Coronado area did not get the $500,000 for improvement to schools and the help to low income children make it through school. The article argues that the people in the Austin Achievement Zone deserve this money and they need the help from the government to better their community and their schools. The publisher brings up the dropout rate for local school s in that area and how the rates are increased with low-income and minority students. He also states how other parts of town were passed for the grant along with the St. Johns area. This article has opened my eyes to the constant need for better everything for children around my town. I do not have children and have not had any experience with the school districts or other problems of that nature, but if I did have kids I would want the best chance for them, even if I could not provide a safe healthy environment for their growth and development. That is what the Austin Achievement Zone wants to do and can’t, because of funding. It’s sad that Texas spend millions of dollars on toll roads and we can’t give more to those who need it, those children that will be running this country in 20 years. The significance of this story is to let the people know the need for help right outside their front door. Every little bits help when it comes to the achievement of success for the youth of America, and more needs to be done to get those kids to stay focused and on track.

Rick Perry and the Levee
Austin and other surrounding towns have been hit hard with massive amounts of rain fall, this being said, in local news Governor Rick Perry has some complaints on how the federal government is handling the stimulus funds for the flood-prone Rio Grande Valley. Perry feels that only a fraction of the funds are being used to “upgrade” the levee and he is not happy about it.
The International Boundary Commission claims that the amount set aside for the levee is being awarded on schedule and feels that the levees have shown improved strength this summer with all the floods along the area.
Perry sent a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton stating this season has raised new concerns due to the three tropical storms the area has already endured this summer. This has left officials in low-lying border counties even more wary than normal. Officials of the Boundary Commission feel that they have made advances in the construction of the levee with the funds. They feel that the levee was “in its best shape” for this season of storms that came through.
With all the talk of flooding I can't help but think of the tragedies of New Orleans, they didn’t get help from the government when they needed it and now we might be repeating history. My favorite park is still underwater from the storms, our cities need help to stay above water and help to keep people safe.
